Chapter Six

Lawson

My heart is racing in my throat as I crash through the front door. Zack is a few steps behind me and leaves, blending back into the growing party. I must have a look of panic on my face as Alyssa rushes through the crowd and makes her way toward me.

“What happened? I saw Jordan and Parker leaving. Are you okay?”

My thoughts are jumbled as I try to decipher exactly what had just happened. Jordan’s kiss is still fresh on my lips and I can still smell his cologne. And now, my secret is out. Whether Jordan will keep it to hold over my head doesn’t really make a difference at this point.

Everyone knows where I live and where I’m from. Now, they’ll just know more of the truth and instead of me being just the new girl, I’ll be known as Jordan’s first conquest who ran away.

I’m pissed at myself for letting this happen. I’m pissed at believing I could take Jordan on myself. And I’m pissed I let that creep kiss me.

I take a deep breath and fake a smile. “It’s fine. Jordan kissed me. Parker thinks I screwed him. No big deal.”

“What! How the hell did that happen, Lawson?” Alyssa walks up the porch and stands next to me like we are on a stage. The porchlight serves as the perfect spotlight as I feel the eyes of the entire party looking in our direction.

“It just did. I let it. I thought I had it under control, and then…” I fight with the decision to tell Alyssa the truth. She has to know before Jordan tells everyone. Alyssa has been the only one here for me since I moved back. She deserves to know.

Alyssa grabs my hand and looks into my eyes. “And then what? Did he hurt you? I’ll kill him.”

“No! Nothing like that. Not this time.”

“This time? Lawson, what the hell are you talking about?”

“Alyssa, there’s something I need to tell you, but I can’t right now. Not with all of these people here. But I promise I will. I need to clear this place out. Where’s Titus?” I pull myself together and try to shake off the events of the last five minutes as I scan the crowd, looking for any sign of Titus or anyone from his gang. “I’m going to look for him.”

I leave Alyssa standing on the porch as I pretend to look for Titus. Right now, it’s more about running away from the truth, again, than facing it.

I feel like everyone already knows the truth and every person is already judging me, believing Jordan, but I have no way of knowing if he’s actually said anything.

As I make my way through the crowd, I run into Skylar and her small group of friends and she shoots me a fake smile, hiding behind her own lies. Instead of telling everyone the truth of what likely happened between her and Jordan, she used it as a stepping stone into popularity. The girl Jordan used.
